About Dr. Elizabeth Joy Erwin
Dr. Elizabeth Joy Erwin is a Professor at Montclair State University, Department of Teaching and Learning where she prepares doctoral and master's degree students to think critically, reflect deeply, and teach inclusively.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Erwin’s commitment to building community and a sense of belonging in schools, especially for young children with disabilities, is shaped by equity and social action - locally, nationally, and globally.
Dr. Erwin has published widely in prestigious academic journals and has authored multiple books and chapters. Her latest book, “The Power of Presence: A Guide to Mindfulness Practices in Early Childhood” focuses on partnering with young children to promote justice in the world and peace within.
Dr. Erwin continues to engage in educational partnerships with universities and organizations around the world. Recent global initiatives include co-leading travel to Italy to attend the Students-Professors Study Group about the Reggio Emilia educational approach, leading a cultural immersion on mindfulness and education in Bali including visits to schools such as the world-renowned Green School, and partnering with a well-known local educational organization in Kenya to plant seeds of learning and well-being to last a lifetime. Currently living in Manhattan, Dr. Erwin practices yoga and meditation every day.
